The #Futurtecture: Five Leading Architects Crowd-Source Questions Online About Where The Architecture Practice Is Heading

The practice of architecture is undergoing seismic changes across the board,
from the rapid rise and collapse of boomtowns like Dubai, to designing for increased security in the wake of 9/11, to the challenges preservationists face as the new demands of sustainability challenge the virtue of historic, yet toxic landmarks. What is an architect to think and do about this discipline's undeniably complex trajectory?

Join Designer Pages for a future-focused panel discussion guided by questions submitted by you and your colleagues of the design community. Our ambition is to collectively address the challenges, opportunities, trends and technologies facing architecture today and tomorrow.

Great panelists, amazing venue, superb company, I think it was a home run. However, I do prefer the 15 minute lightning talks to the panel format, but it was a good change of pace. IDNY putting this together is a real sign of how this group is maturing, well done everyone!

Great speakers. Rarely does anyone have a chance to listen to even a single speaker so accomplished and having contributed so much to this industry. Last night, there were in fact five industry heavyweights in the room to share their thoughts on the future trajectory of our profession. Thank you to James S. Russell for moderating. And thanks to all the guests for the questions.

strong idea, would have preferred fewer panelist and better conversation among them. some predictable comments could have been pushed around a bit more.

I thought both the panelists and the moderator were great, very well-informed and had excellent points to make. If you weren't in the first two rows or unusually tall, it was impossible to see who was speaking at any given time. It also didn't help that at some point, people started to go back out and have obnoxiously loud conversations near the bar.

Panel was interesting and provocative. Intro way, way, way too long! Noise from the back was distracting. Mikes could have been louder. Panel could have been on a platform so audience could see faces as they spoke.

Information was interesting and informative but it does not give the people who attend the Meetup to interact with the guest speakers and network with them on a one to one basis. For example, exchange a business card or review and clarify some of the information presented a the meeting. In this particular presentation, there was no mention of Budgets or Cost during this recession in our economy. Why are these prestigous Architectural Firms working abroad? Is it because there is no work in the United States? Working abroad does not create jobs for NYC Architects?? Who establishes the Budget for the Architect's Design and Material Specifications? The meetings should allow more participation by the attendees, etc.

it would be interesting to hear&meet younger, less corporate architects, who have their own businneses...

Maybe a followup meetup should include younger architects who have bigger stake in what the future holds. With all due respect, the guests at these meeting will be retiring in the next decade. Maybe it's time to step aside and make room for new ideas and energy-- it felt a bit like old men’s club last night! I'd like to hear more constructive exchange between them and up-and-coming generation. How do the old guys see transition and transfer of their architectural legacy and experience to the new generation? Technology is very important, but it's not the same as being fresh, supportive and open-minded to the future of the profession which is essentially young(er) architects and their education.
